Bishop George Leo Thomas’ Statement on Today’s Violence at the US Capitol
Dear Friends in Christ:
We join our voices with people of good will everywhere, condemning the violence and lawlessness that unfolded today in Washington, D.C.
Along with my fellow Bishops, I strongly condemn the actions of the misguided protesters and anarchists who breached the Capitol chambers today, wreaking havoc and mayhem while lawmakers debated the certification of the presidential election results.
I strongly echo the sentiments of Archbishop José Gomez, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, who wrote, “This is not who we are as Americans ... the peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of this great nation.”
During these pivotal days, when the nation is already under considerable duress, we turn to the Prince of Peace asking Him to guard and guide the United States, and to keep us true to our ideals as “One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend George Leo Thomas, Ph.D. Bishop of Las Vegas

Pope Francis announced "Year of St. Joseph" starting December 8, 2020 through December 8, 2021:
Prayer to St. Joseph:
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage,
and defend us from every evil. Amen.

Note: Dispensation from attending mass through January 31, 2021 includes Sundays and Holy days of Obligation
DECREE - Dispensation from the Obligation to Attend Mass Extension - December 31, 2020 through January 31, 2021
While I have granted permission to begin the reopening of public Masses, due to the ongoing gravity of the present moment and the restrictions being placed on us during the civil reopening plan, I hereby extend the dispensation for all Catholic faithful of the Diocese of Las Vegas and those Catholics visiting within the geographic boundaries of our Diocese, from the obligation of attending Sunday Masses up to and including January 31, 2021.
While we recognize that many are eager to return to Mass in our churches, it remains important for those who are elderly and otherwise at risk to refrain from returning to public liturgies until it is manifestly safe to do so. for all the faithful, especially those who are sick, at high risk of becoming sick, and their caregivers, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is hereby dispensed.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend George L. Thomas, Ph.D.
Bishop of the Diocese of Las Vegas
Date: 17 November 2020
George Leo Thomas, Ph.D.
Obispo de Las Vegas

Bishop Thomas’ Reflection on Pope Francis’ “Civil Unions” Statement
Pope Francis’ comments regarding civil unions were made in the context of the documentary interview called Francesco by filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky.
In this documentary, the Pope expressed an openness to laws that recognize civil unions, including those of gay couples.
The Holy Father’s remarks do not change the Catholic Church’s consistent teachings that marriage is, as Jesus taught, “the union of man and woman as the Creator willed it…” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1614 – see #1602-1620 on Marriage in God’s Plan.)
Rather, the Pope’s observations flow from the life stories of persons in a variety of domestic partnerships who have faced struggles and hardships in their daily lives over benefits that married couples often take for granted.
In the past these included issues like the ability to participate in employer sponsored health insurance programs, access to loved ones who are hospitalized, and survivor benefits.
The Holy Father has been consistent in his belief that “...marriage is a union between a man and women. You can’t change it just like that.” He wrote, “It’s the nature of things.”
The Pope’s recognition of “civil unions” is the first time that a Pope has acknowledged the possible benefits associated with these unions.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
Lord Jesus, Son of the eternal Father and Mary Immaculate, grant those among us who are being called to a vocation to priesthood or religious life, the generosity necessary to follow their call, and the courage required to overcome all obstacles to their vocation. Give parents that faith, love, and spirit of sacrifice which will inspire them to offer their children to God’s service and to rejoice whenever one of their children is called to the priesthood and religious life. Let your example and that of your Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph encourage both young people and parents and let your grace sustain them. Amen.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.

SCAM Warning: Please be aware that there are already multiple scams being circulated about the coronavirus – including attempts at trying to pitch ‘early government refund payments, hawk bogus vaccines and cures, and soliciting funds from fake religious/religious organizations. Please be on guard about this and let your parishioners know that the Diocesan Bishop, priests, deacons, and parishes and Diocese will never make these types of calls or communications. One parish and one office in the chancery have already received these calls.
